Numb3rs Fic: Close
Written for numb3rs100 Author Reward

Title: Close
Series/Universe: Obshina
Pairing/Characters: Don, Charlie
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: Sniper Zero, Toxin, Backscatter
Summary: Once Alan is back home Don asks Charlie about Ian
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Don wove his way through the crowd at his father's welcome home party and headed for his brother.

Charlie was distracted, watching Ian go refill their drinks.

"Looks like you and Ian got to be pretty close in Nevada."

"Well, I uh... We uh..."

Don eyed him suspiciously. "Charlie, is there something going on between you and Ian?"

Charlie stammered briefly then took a breath and boldly said, "Yes."

Don grinned.

"Ian, huh? Well, I guess if Ian's looking after you I won't have to worry about you anymore."

Charlie laughed happily.

"No, nothing to worry about... Nothing at all..."

This fic was custom written for dance_the_code as part of the Four for Fic promotion at numb3rs100.

This story is the last of twenty parts in the Obshina Series based on the episode Backscatter.

Now a brain dump on titles as promised... ;-)

First a quick comment on them. I chose one word titles for the whole fic because this was meant to be a fast paced fic series and I didn't want to drag it down with lengthy titles. That sort of abruptness goes through the whole series: titles are brief, scenes wrap up fast, the action moves swiftly back and forth between Don's investigation and Charlie/Ian, etc. A lot of this story was intended to go on in the reader's head, not on the page. Numb3rs viewers are smart; I had faith you all could fill in the blanks. /grins/

So here goes...

Obshina, Chechnya – set international tone, remind reader of Backscatter, juxtapose mob community against Eppes family community

Hidden, Panic, Comfort – convey Charlie's situation and emotions as well as setting up his needs which Ian will fulfill

Forget, Forgetting, Forgotten – three Fs in a row, Charlie/Ian, Charlie knows he's freaking and needs to escape and forget for a while which Ian helps him do

Verboten – a pun follow up title since in English this would be Forbidden, wraps up Charlie/Ian while pointing out that Ian shouldn't have gotten involved personally while on the job, reminds of international case, starts segue back to FBI case

Secure – wraps up Billy and Alan and completes the segue from family concerns back to the FBI case now that both family members are secure

Trap, Bait – Don makes his plans to use Colby to trap Gregor by using himself as bait, starts the trap theme that continues through the series

Trust, Want, Heat – three titles that end in T which also ties them in to Bait and to Trap which begins with a T, titles echo the Charlie/Ian relationship progression

Set, Sprung, Snared – three Ss in a row, continues the theme started with Trap and Bait, the titles echo the process of capturing Gregor in the trap while hinting at Gregor thinking he's set a trap for Don

Over, Close – both puns for the end of the series, Close is in the fic describing how close Charlie and Ian have gotten which was a key point of the initial request

Well that's it, although I can pretty much guarantee you that after I post this I'll come up with more stuff that I forgot to put in. ;-) There's more detail in some of the individual Confessions than I posted here, but I wanted to do a quick sweep of all the titles in this final post to capture all the arcs and such.

Overall it was fun titling these fic. Normally I don't have to come up with so many titles in such a short period of time so this was a rather unique experience.

Thank you to dance_the_code for supporting numb3rs100. This concludes your twenty part Reward Fic series Obshina. I'm glad you liked it.

Thank you to all the readers for sticking with me for all twenty installments. I hope you all enjoyed this series as much as I did. I appreciate your support and hope you stay tuned for my other Reward Fic series Wildcard.

To anyone else who would like to have Reward Fic written for them, check out the Monday challenge posts on numb3rs100 for more information on how authors *and* readers can get custom fic like this.

Yay! Nice ending, gave me the warm fuzzies. I like that Don reacts positively to Charlie/Ian and that Charlie is happy...

Yeah, I wanted a happy ending all around.

Don might find Ian an odd match for Charlie, but considering he trusted Ian with his brother's life I think he's not going to balk at trusting him with Charlie's heart. :-)

Glad you enjoyed the series.

An excellent conclusion to Obshina. I enjoyed your explanation of the titles. I am glad Charlie and Ian are together with Don accepting their relationship. You have deftly interwoven the case with the developing relationship between Charlie and Ian. I enjoy what happened after stories. This one makes me very happy.

Re: Bravo!!!
An excellent conclusion to Obshina.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I enjoyed your explanation of the titles.

Ah, nice to know someone read all that! ;-) I write the Confessions because I am compelled to and I'm always surprised to hear when someone actually pays attention to them. /grins/

I am glad Charlie and Ian are together with Don accepting their relationship.

I replied to someone else saying basically if Don trusts Ian with Charlie's *life* I'm sure he trusts him with his *heart*.

You have deftly interwoven the case with the developing relationship between Charlie and Ian.

That was the enjoyable challenge for me: writing Charlie/Ian in the context of a believable case that had to be told in only 100 word increments. The story may be 2000 words total but it's written totally differently than a 2000 word all in one story.

I enjoy what happened after stories. This one makes me very happy.

I'm pleased so many people liked the premise that Dance requested. Hopefully future Reward Fic series will go over as well.

What no drama!

I love these, I'm selfish I want more
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on November 28th, 2006 10:50 pm (UTC)
I think after 19 drabbles of drama I'm allowed a happy ending. ;-)

We'll see what people ask for in the coming Reward Fic series. There are still some open I'm waiting to hear on.

Thank you! I really enjoyed this one. It's by far my longest drabble series ever, but I'm really chuffed by how it turned out.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for making your way through all 20 parts. :-)

A fun series! I find reading a series in 100 word drabbles frustrating but sometimes it's worth it. :)

I was wary of the idea of Ian/Charlie at first, but you made it work. Also loved Don's approval.
