Title: Miss Information
Series/Universe: Near Miss
Pairing/Characters: Garcia/Morgan
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Extreme Aggressor
Summary: Morgan is concerned when Garcia goes back to work on Monday
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Are you sure about this?"

Derek's hands rested on Penelope's shoulders as he stared her down, seemingly unconvinced she was ready to be working the Monday after her attack.

"Because we can turn around right now and go home. You don't have to stay, you know. We don't have an active case right now..."

"I'm fine," Penelope assured him. "If I need anything I know where to find you."

"I could get another instructor to cover my class..."

"Goodbye, Derek." Penelope stressed the words and gave Derek a subtle nudge towards the door, the hint of which was totally lost on him.

"I'll be back at lunch to check on you," he continued, "so if you want to just do a half day..."

"Derek!" she cried in exasperation, putting her hands flat on his chest and pushing him from the room. "Get out of my bunker so I can get to work!" she scolded.

"Okay, okay! I'll go." Penelope stopped pushing and he took her hands off his chest and held them in his own. "You take care, baby girl," he said quietly.

Before she could respond Derek leaned in and planted a soft yet chaste kiss on her lips. He squeezed her hands as he pulled back and then let them fall reluctantly as he walked away.

Penelope stood and watched him go, standing there for a long time after he was out of sight. When she finally sat down at her computers it took her a few minutes to shake the distraction before she could throw herself into her work fully and put the weekend behind her.

Not for the first time that morning Derek found himself staring at the ceiling unexpectedly.

"Dude, you totally should have seen that move coming."

Derek shook himself back to his senses and took the hand his student proffered.

"You're right, I should have." Derek saw Andre, another hand to hand combat instructor, at the entrance to the gym and nodded to him. "Take five, people. I'll be right back."

He walked over, groaning inside at the smirk on Andre's face.

"Man, he laid you flat out. You – The Derek Morgan." He shook his head in mock dismay.

"Everyone's entitled to an off day," Derek grumbled.

"Rough weekend?" he taunted.

"You could say that. A woman I care about was attacked and almost got herself raped and killed."

The smirk vanished from the other man's face.

"Shit, no way. Is she all right?"

"She will be, but I tell you she messed that guy up but good. I'm beginning to think she'd do a better job teaching this class today than me." He scrubbed the back of his neck and let out an exasperated breath. "I just can't focus."

"Then take off. I'll finish the class."

Derek looked up and saw only sincerity on the fellow agent's face. "Seriously?"

He shrugged. "No sweat. You'd do the same for me."

Derek clapped him on the shoulder in appreciation. "In a heartbeat, man. Thanks..."

He headed for the locker room as Andre went over to the students to start up the class again. Once inside he sat on a bench and put his head in his hands.

His job required him to focus. He carried a gun. He went into the field with criminals. He couldn't let someone get the upper hand out there. It could mean life or death.

He flashed back to seeing Penelope in the hospital.

It wasn't just his life at stake either.

"Casa de Garcia! Canned Whup Ass is our speciality. Who may I beat up for you today?"

"Penelope! It's Kaitlin! Oh my god, Tammy just told me what happened!"

Penelope heard a man clear his throat behind her in the bunker doorway and jumped before turning around timidly.

"I'll call you back," she said into her headset then hung up abruptly, staring guiltily as Jason stood arms crossed on her threshold.

"Can I see you in my office?" he said quietly before turning to walk back through the BAU bullpen.

Penelope caught up with him as he neared his door.

"Sir, I'm really sorry. I only answer the phone as a joke when I recognize the extension. Ask Derek, he'll tell you..."

Jason ushered her into his office and gestured to a seat. "Please sit down." He moved to sit behind his desk. "The local police briefed Hotch and I on your case," he said solemnly. "I have to say I'm surprised that you chose to come back to work so soon..." He held up a hand to silence her protest before she could get a word out. "But I admire the fact that you don't want this unfortunate incident to get in the way of your normal life. Just know that if you need anything everyone in the BAU is behind you one hundred percent."

Penelope couldn't speak, too choked up to say anything. She nodded and eventually managed a quiet, "Thank you, sir."

"We're just glad you're all right and personally I'm impressed that you stopped a serial rapist on your own. You should be proud of yourself."

"I am, sir," she croaked out. "I may not be like your agents, but I have trained hard just in case."

Jason nodded. "That's smart of you. Things might have gone very differently had you not been so well prepared." He stood and she stood as well. "Let me know if there's anything I can do."

"Thank you, sir," she repeated. "That's very kind of you." She headed for the door and stopped when she heard him speak behind her.

"Oh, and Garcia?" She turned, trying not to look as nervous as she felt. "I don't care how you answer the phone as long as it's internal. You do your job and you do it exceptionally well. That's all I care about."

Penelope couldn't hold back her giddy grin.

"Thank you, sir."

When Derek walked into Penelope's bunker and found it empty a flush of panic ran through him.

Forcing himself to calm down, he tried to remind himself she was in the safest place around – the offices of the FBI.

He plopped down in her chair and let his head fall back, closing his eyes against the glaring array of monitors in front of him.

He'd tried to occupy himself with paperwork after leaving his class, but found he couldn't focus on that either.

He'd ended up spending the next two hours in the gym, working out his anger and frustration on the heavy bag until his knuckles ached and he could stop picturing the attacker's face on the receiving end of his fists.

"Hey handsome..."

The voice behind him made him smile and he relaxed into the chair, finally feeling that all was right with the world again.

Penelope's hands slid onto his shoulders and gave them a little squeeze.

"Hey princess," he tossed back lightly.

"You're kind of early for lunch. I usually don't go until after one."

Derek glanced at the clock and saw that it was only 11:38AM.

"Then let's go get some coffee. I could use some."

She gathered up her purse and her newly knitted wrap then waited for him to rise.

He got up slowly, still sore from his excessive exercise and from being thrown to the mat repeatedly.

She raised an eyebrow at him, but he waved her off. "Class was rough today, okay? No making fun of me."

"Never," she said with a kindhearted smile, looping her uninjured arm through his. "Come on. You're buying..."

"Oh really?" he teased. "Why does that sound like I'm going to end up buying you more than a cup of coffee?"

"Because there's a muffin with my name on it at the commissary and if you're nice to me I'll share it with you."

"If I'm really nice, I'll buy one for myself so you don't have to share," he offered, patting her hand on his arm affectionately.

"I knew you were a smart guy," she enthused. "That is so the right answer..."

Derek was quiet, almost pensive when they went for coffee and halfway through lunch – during which he'd been equally taciturn - Penelope gave him a sharp poke.

"Ow!" he complained. "What was that for?"

"Who are you and what have you done with Derek Morgan?" she demanded.

"It's me," he said, sounding hurt. "Same old me, same as always."

"No, it's not," Penelope protested. "The Derek Morgan I know laughs at my jokes because he thinks they're funny, not because he thinks I need someone to laugh at them. Have you even heard a word I've said this whole time? Really heard?"

Chastened, Derek realized he really hadn't been paying attention. His mind had been elsewhere all day waiting to see Penelope again and now that he was with her he still wasn't present. It seemed Penelope was handling putting the attack behind her better than he was.

"I'm really sorry," he apologized. "I guess I'm just having a bad day all around."

Penelope frowned for a few seconds then brightened a little as she reached into her lunch bag and pulled out a large red apple. "Here, have my apple."

He took the fruit from her hand with a sly grin. "I'm taking an apple from a beautiful woman. Should I be worried?"

"See any snakes?" she taunted.

"No, but it could be poison."

Penelope snatched the apple from his hand, took a big bite out of it and put it back in his hand.

"See?" she mumbled, talking with her mouth full. "No poison."

Derek chuckled and took a bite of the apple. "If I had to fall from grace with anyone, it'd be you, beautiful."

He held the apple out to her and Penelope took it back, taking another bite out of it.

"Damn straight."

They passed the apple back and forth until they reached the core.

Derek tossed the remains into the trash and helped her gather up her lunch things.

"The commissary's still open. Let's see if they have any cheesecake."

"Cheesecake?" She looked at him, a little surprised.

"Hey, I worked out for over two hours today. I think I deserve a little something."

"What about me?" she asked as they headed out.

He slipped an arm around her lightly as they walked.

"You, sweetness, always deserve it."

This installment of the Near Miss Series was started months ago and laid fallow on my partial fic list annoying me with its incompleteness. I kept waiting for the muse to give me the rest of the story and was continually frustrated at the absolute lack of inspiration to take the fic any further.

Stupid me, I didn't realize that was her way of telling me the fic was bloody *done* thank you very much. /headdesk/

I guess I expected Garcia's first day back at work to be a fairly momentous occasion, filled with fawning coworkers all expressing their support and such. Apparently not. While I did get in the scene with Gideon, this fic seems to be more about how *Morgan* is handling - or not as the case may be - going back to work after her attack.

It ends at lunch, which feels weird, but I guess the muse got her point across and didn't feel the need to clock out so to speak. Go figure.

So I am kind of left wondering. What was her point? I guess it was to show how Garcia is strong enough to go back to work, that Morgan - now that he's taking a break from his weekend protector role - is not dealing well with this trauma and that the level of intimacy between them is escalating: the chaste kiss and the sharing of the apple being a step beyond what is shown in canon.

Normally my muse and I communicate just fine. Chapters end with chapter markers (which are different for each fandom I write - Numb3rs has a plus sign for math and CM has a slash as in a knife wound) and the fic ends in an end of fic marker (an equals sign for Numb3rs and a triple slash for CM). This fic had a single slash after the end so I just assumed there was more. That and it felt incomplete to me. It still does, but I figured it's a series and I have to have faith in the muse that whatever I need will be fulfilled in future installments.

I suppose I should say whatever is *missing*... /grins/

As far as the title goes, I guess in a way it denotes Garcia's role at work. They come to her for information they need and she supplies it. She puts the I in IT. ;-)

My thanks go out to all the betas and readers who over the months it took to get this out read the fic and gave feedback, encouraged the series and pushed the muse to get this installment out. I'm sorry to have kept you all waiting so long.

Now on to the next installment...

Thank you for saying so. That's very nice of you.

I did not squeal when I saw, no I did not .. ok maybe a little lol that was such a lovely story between, though the surprising thing on my behalf is that I enjoyed the conversation between Garcia and Jason most of all. Its so rare on the show to see them talking and when they do, I find its something that stands out because their two completely different people and you can tell they care about each other. Especially in the conversation here.

Yes I'm a Garcia/Morgan junky and I think the nicknames they have for each are adorable, especially the way you used one of them in the last line. Their just adorable. I'm going to stop gushing now lol it was a lovely story :)

Hee! Squeeage makes my day!

the surprising thing on my behalf is that I enjoyed the conversation between Garcia and Jason most of all

That scene really worked for me. I could see her feeling nervous at possibly getting in trouble since she respects her boss so much and really hates the idea of letting him down. I can see him as being intimidating, but I can also see her as being really touched by his show of concern and his admiration of how she handled things. I had originally felt like this needed to be a much longer fic covering all that Garcia went through once her coworkers found out, but somehow that scene just took care of that need so completely I didn't write anything else like it.

FWIW, I thought sweetness was something that Garcia calls Morgan, but the muse decided that he calls her that as well. /grins/ I think Morgan found in her someone who can dish it out as much as she can take it and it's possible he never really met his flirting match until he met her.

Man, now I am going to have to work this flirting philosophy into my Beginnings Series. I started the second fic in that series and he just laid eyes on her for the first time. Of course all he's seen is the back of her head and he doesn't know it's her, but I've only written a page so far. Give me time... ;-)

Thanks for your great comments. I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic.

Thank you! I wasn't sure about this installment, but I am glad people are liking it. I just felt like it should have been longer, but better published and short than stuck in limbo forever, right? Hehehe

You'll be happy to know I have already started a new M/G fic. It's called First Impressions and it's the second fic in the Beginnings Series. Wish me luck on getting it done soon... /smiles/

Thanks for your comments!

*claps* Yay!!

I am such a huge fan of these two and I'm always disappointed by the lack of fic and then I see yours and *bam* happy me.

So...uh, more right? *cow eyes*

Hi and welcome! I haven't seen you before on my LJ so pull up a chair and have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

/puts out plate of treats and a pot of tea/

I have more M/G fic coming, never fear. I started the second fic in the Beginnings Series today and will try to see about the next fic in the Near Miss Series as well. A Quick Call and Blood and Roses will have to wait. There is only so much M/G a girl can juggle at once. /grins/

I love this pairing so I plan to keep the fic coming as fast as my muse will let me...

Thanks for coming to read and comment.

Yay! So great to see more of this series. I just adore it immensely. This is just wonderful. The sharing of the apple was just so wonderful and sweet, very intimate without being over the top or too sexy. Again, this is great.

I really love this series... Its so sweet! I love the fact that Garcia kicked ass,but that Morgan is still so worried about her!!

Any chance there are going to be any more stories in this series? Would be nice to see your muse in action again with this!!

Thanks for the great read of all these stories!

I have more fic in this series planned. The muse is just being uncooperative. Grr.

I'm glad you enjoyed them. I really need to write more CM.

Not sure if you also read the crossovers, but if you're a Garcia fan you might enjoy them even if you don't watch Numb3rs.

Aww, that was cute. I've been so caught up reading the series, I'm afraid I haven't been very good at reviewing. *oops*
