Numb3rs Fic: The Inevitable Conclusion
Written for numb3rsflashfic Challenge #33 - Discovery

Title: The Inevitable Conclusion
Pairing/Characters: Don/Charlie, Alan
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: None
Summary: Don knew he and Charlie would get found out eventually
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Other comments are housed at numb3rsflashfic.

Room 4A - Special Agent Donald Eppes

The interrogation room table is cool and slick under his palms.

He studies his fingers splayed across the fake wood surface.

He does not speak.

He has no experience on this side of the table, but he knows enough to lawyer up.

He prays Charlie does the same.

+

Room 4C - Professor Charles Eppes

He fidgets incessantly and asks for his brother every five minutes.

He swears there's been some kind of misunderstanding until they tell him what the charge is.

He says nothing for a good twenty minutes, then quietly asks that someone call his lawyer.

He also begs them not to call his father.

+

Room 4B - Alan Eppes

They put him in the observation room and let him sweat for a while.

He watches both sons, but is not allowed to listen to the audio from either room.

He's furious by the time the detective walks in, yelling at the top of his lungs that his sons are innocent of this ridiculous charge.

Then they play the audio tape.

Alan listens, stunned, until it comes to its conclusion.

He throws up in the trash can and walks out without a word.

The detective doesn't stop him.

+

Charlie wrings his hands and keeps glancing at the door.

Alan drives home and silently begins packing his things.

Don always knew this was the inevitable conclusion to his relationship with Charlie.

Then again, his relationship with Charlie was inevitable too...

Confession
I confess I could have easily posted this for the Interrogation Challenge over at N100, but I didn't.

One, I was happy with this fic as is and it's 250 words long. I only post fic on the perfect 100s at N100. Yeah, I'm kind of anal that way. /grins/

Two, I know all the N100 prompts in advance and I happen to know that this month's line up would make a nice series. I don't have a series idea for them yet, but then the prompt hasn't even been posted yet. Hehehe (Note: This was obviously written in advance before I posted tonight's new prompt at N100 and before I came up with the idea for the series for this month: Femme Fatale.)

Three, I have been thinking about posting at numb3rsflashfic for a while. They lost me ages ago when they did an artwork prompt that left me with zero inspiration. I also have an issue with their rules about where and when authors are allowed to post their fic, but that's neither here nor there. At this point there are plenty of past prompts I can write and post both there and on my LJ at the same time so it's not as big a deal. I also don't have to write the prompts in order so I am just popping up with fic as it fits one of their prompts.

I chided an N100 author once for writing fic first then trying to find a prompt to match it. Bad me. Now I am doing the same thing. Still, the prompt was not a stretch at all and this is not my normal M.O. Normally I do like the challenge of writing for a prompt, but I also want to support audrarose and spikedluv in their comm and posting fic there is the best way for me to do that. :-)

Very special thanks to betas sororcula and iolsai for their assistance with this fic.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Oh, I can picture Charlie a total nervous wreck and Don struggling to be stoic.

I am so evil... Hehehe

Thanks for your lovely comments.

Oh wow, I really liked this. It was dark and hurty and sigh. I love it.

Oh cool! You read Numb3rs fic too? Well, then there's plenty to read here!

Glad you liked it. Dark and hurty is a speciality here at Chez DeMarais...

Thanks...

Random belated comment alert!

One word: Ouch.

So much hurt and pain, and yet there was never really going to be any other outcome. It's Alan I feel worst for. Came over here via your link from my take on this situation, and I can see that you've managed to pack in just as much emotion using far less words than me! Bravo!

However...

Are you considering doing a sequel?
I loved this story; it’s the most likely ending to Charlie/Don. But it just made me curios to find out, how they came to this point.

Are you considering doing a sequel? Is this part of a bigger series?

Re: Are you considering doing a sequel?
What a nice surprise! Thank you! It's been a long time since I wrote this and a fresh comment is nice to get.

I never wrote a sequel to this and it's not part of a bigger universe, however I did write a long fic called Addiction that I likely will turn into a series. In it Alan finds out about Don and Charlie and has a very violent negative reaction. To me, it felt like how Alan might really react if he were disgusted by the idea of his sons having sex. I don't resolve the Alan issue in that fic, so I'm looking at doing a sequel for that one.

Addiction's pretty intense (lots of graphic sex and arguably double dub-con/non-con) but it's definitely the kind of fic that focuses on the repercussions of what Don and Charlie do together.

If that doesn't scare you off, LMK and I'll go find you a link to it.
