Summary: Peter tries to talk Nathan into not sending Claire away
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"I have no choice."

Nathan stood at the fireplace, his back to his brother as if to ward off the effects of his persuasion.

"That's a crock and you know it, Nathan," Peter spat out. "I get that you don't want her showing up in public right before the election, but for God's sake! We are talking about millions of lives at risk - the very people you supposedly want to represent in Congress! How can letting them get massacred be putting their best interests first? Tell me!"

"It's not that simple."

"It is." Peter's voice softened as he took a few steps towards his brother's tense form. "I am going to explode. I believe Claire is the one to stop it from happening. You have to let her stay."

"It's not safe for her here," Nathan argued.

"Then you better send Heidi and the boys away too, because it's about to be not safe for everyone in New York."

Nathan stared into the flames for a moment.

"You can't know for sure that this is going to happen."

"Isaac does. Isaac painted it all - me flying, me invisible, what happened in Texas, the exploding man and the devastation of the city. What more do you need?"

"Paintings aren't proof, Peter. As far as I know he didn't paint anything that proves definitively that you're the one who explodes."

"I saw it myself! Me, in my own head."

"You were unconscious."

Peter sighed.

"I could just take her, you know. There's no way you could stop me from leaving with her."

Nathan stood in silence for a moment.

"If you were going to do that you would have done it already," he said quietly.

Seconds passed, the ticking of the grandfather clock in the next room audible in the dead air.

The feel of a warm hand cupping Nathan's face melted him. He let out a breath and leaned into the invisible palm soothing him.

Warm air ghosted over his face just before he felt gentle pressure against his lips.

He relaxed into the familiar kiss, wrapping his arms around the space in front of him as Peter coalesced into them.

All Nathan's tension and anxiety about his fate, his future, the onus that was being put upon him, all fell away.

His arms tightened around Peter as he sought refuge - as he had so many times before - in the quiet confidence and stalwart love of his brother.

Strong as he was for the public, for his wife, with Linderman, he could let that all go and be weak with Peter. He could be human, even if only for a brief stolen moment shielded from the limelight and the hypercritical eye of the media.

"I can't do this without you, Pete," Nathan whispered. "I need you on my side."

Peter forced Nathan's chin up so he could look him in the eye.

"I am always on your side. You just have to trust me."

Nathan looked at him plaintively, but Peter was unmovable.

So was Linderman.

Stepping back, he laid a lingering hand on Peter's chest for a moment before heading to his desk, putting distance and hopefully perspective between them.

"I need to think about this."

Peter nodded.

"You have a decision to make."

"I do."

He sat down at his desk, slipping back into his professional façade.

Before he could settle in he looked up to find Peter gone.

He sat back in his chair a moment and felt a broad hand slide down his chest. He closed his eyes, leaning back as he relished the invisible intimacy.

"I can't die, but you can," said the voice hovering near his ear. "I can't lose you..."

The hand and voice disappeared and Nathan felt an aching void flare up in their wake.

The door to his study opened and then closed on its own.

Nathan sat staring at the closed door for a moment then turned to look out the window, to look out over the city as it was and as he hoped it would remain.

But now was not the time for hope.

It was time to make a decision.

I debated telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in this confession.

I confess that this is the truth.

I wrote this as a result of a prompt I saw in a comm. I wanted to write that prompt and saw no reason why I shouldn't - or rather my muse didn't since she handed me this fic right after I read it. Unfortunately the comm owners didn't agree.

People often ask me why I don't post fic at more comms or participate in more ficathons and such. I have just had too many bad experiences and it makes me feel like the extra work and annoyances just aren't worth it.

My muse needs no prompts, no challenges, no contests. She churns out hundreds of fic a year. I have thousands more ideas I don't even bother trying to type up. She doesn't need to go looking elsewhere.

So now I have two orphan fic to share with you - both Nathan/!Invisible Peter which is apparently a new kink my slash wife and I both like.

I saw someone ask for Plaude porn where they are both invisible having sex in the same room as Nathan. Wow... That was oddly hot in unexpected ways.

So now I have Peter using this power to get close to Nathan. It's mostly for show, but I like the double meaning of them having to keep their relationship from being seen by others.

FWIW, I don't like the title of this fic. It's what I was given though, so I persevere. I think it's the title because of what is really going on. Peter thinks Nathan is pondering the decision to send Claire away. What is really weighing on his mind is Linderman asking him to let the city burn for the greater good. That is one decision he cannot let Peter in on and I felt for Nathan - carrying this burden and not being able to turn to the most loving and supportive person in his life. I did kind of like that Decision reminds me of elections, like seeing Decision 2000 on a news graphic behind a news anchor (preferably Jon Stewart hehehe).

I know people probably expect NC17 from me when they see Nathan/Peter, but I couldn't have made this even R if I tried. (And yeah, I actually did try! LOL!) Inserting needless porn would have ruined the whole piece so I gave up and let the human connection tell the story, not specific body parts.

I don't know where this fic fits in the scheme of canon. It's not missing scene, it's not a retelling of a recent scene and it doesn't fit exactly in .07% or in The Hard Part.

It's just the decision and the two brothers in a moment out of time.

Like Isaac could have painted...

I loved it. I loved the way Nathan can be weak around Peter, I loved how Peter can't go on without Nathan. Beautiful.

*sighs* The poor boys.

One wants to the right thing and the other is trying to do the right thing.

Loverly piece.

I really like this, and the way that they interact. Nice story.
