Criminal Minds Fic: Winding Down
Posted to bau_fic

Title: Winding Down
Pairing/Characters: Derek, Spencer
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Extreme Aggressor
Summary: Derek and Spencer discuss bedtime reading material
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Two more pages and I am out of here!"

Derek strode into the BAU break room, aiming for a final cup of coffee to get him through the last of his paperwork. He walked past Spencer curled up on the couch, his gangly frame twisted into a pretzel of tangled limbs as he read intently.

Spencer managed a cursory nod in greeting, but his attention didn't waver as his hand sped down the pages then turned them.

"Whatchu readin' Reid?"

"The latest Journal of Neuropsychology," Spencer replied without looking up. "They have a fascinating article theorizing the extent of the role of neuropeptides in glial cell morphology."

Derek chuckled. "A little light bedtime reading?"

Spencer looked up, pensive. "I do find it relaxing. Science fascinates me, so it makes for a good distraction before falling asleep."

Derek snatched the journal and read an excerpt from it. "Vasopressin co-exists with dynorphin and galanin in magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic nucleus..." He handed the journal back to Spencer. "It worked. I'm already yawning."

"Well, what do you read then?"

"Novels. Tom Clancy, Grisham, whatever has a big hero who always gets his man. You should try them sometime."

Spencer shook his head. "I'll stick to my dry journals, thanks."

"Novels are more exciting," Derek enticed.

Spencer opened the journal and gave Derek a wry smile.

"Yes, but in my bedtime reading no one gets murdered."

Derek nodded, conceding the point, a grin breaking out on his face.

"Touché, man. Touché."

I confess.

I have a second LJ.

/hangs head/

I suppose some of you readers might have stumbled across it, but for the most part it's friends only and locked up nice and tight.

(That might change soon. More to come on that front if I decide to start making public posts on it. The thought scares me so give me time.)

I posted a playful offer to write snippets for friends who offered me challenges and had a great time with it. Eventually Criminal Minds came up and I wrote a Garcia line for her to answer the phone with. ("31 Flavors of Garcia! Every one of them brilliant! How many scoops for you today?") The muse took hold and before I knew it I had started a snippet which turned into a ficlet.

I took what I posted, polished it a bit and am posting it here to share with everyone.

I also have a Garcia and Morgan snippet of just banter. I like it enough you might see that one soon in real fic form as well. There can never be enough Garcia and Morgan banter in the world. ;-)

My thanks go out to leda_speaks since it was her challenge that spawned the fic and to philleegirl, iolsai and my lovely slash wife (now under her new name) melissima for keeping the thread going so long. It really made the whole experience fun and not at all like fic writing work. More huge thanks to the incomparable asemic who inspired the whole post idea to start with.

FWIW, I totally ripped off the science stuff with zero consideration for accuracy this time around. (God bless Wikipedia>!) Hell, I took the word peptides from frigging ST:TNG! I have no idea if there even is a Journal of Neuropsychology. (Bad me for being so apathetic I can't even bring myself to google it to check.) Still, it is scary that I do know some of this stuff - especially glial cells. (Neuropeptide Y! GABA! Hee! Brains can be fun!)

Ahem. Sorry, that must have been Sylar... /snicker/

Oh, and one last thing. It was *painful* to do so, but I left the line "Whatchu readin'" as is. I despite writing words wrong just to match phonetics, but in this case Derek asking "What are you reading" would have fallen completely flat IMHO. I hope I don't have to do that again.

And I hope people forgive me for making Derek read Clancy and Grisham. The man has taste - he reads Kurt Vonnegut. It just suited the fic for him to read mindless bestsellers to fall asleep by...

That was very sweet, and very in-character. *mems*

Cute conversation piece. I could see them actually having that conversation.
