Kaito Nakamura sat up a bit straighter at the dinner table and his wife Ishi and children automatically did the same, ready to hear what pronouncement he would make.

"I have decided to take Hiro with me on my next business trip."

Ishi nodded in silent acknowledgment of his decision.

Kimiko bowed her head slightly, hiding her disappointment.

Hiro could barely sit still in his chair, beaming with delight.

"Thank you, Father!" He bowed his head respectfully albeit quickly in his excitement. "May I ask where we are going?"

"New York City."

Kaito dabbed a napkin at his mouth and rose from the table.

The discussion was over.

"New York!" Hiro practically bounced off the walls of his bedroom. "I'm going to New York! Whoo hoo!"

"This is a very special honor," Kimiko reminded him patiently. "You must be on your best behavior so you will not dishonor our family in America."

"I want to see the Statue of Liberty!" Hiro continued, oblivious to Kimiko's cautionary tone. "I want to eat a hot dog and go to the top of the tallest skyscraper and..."

"Hiro!" Kimiko put out a hand to still Hiro's near gymnastic fit of glee, but it fell away as he bounded by. "You must be a good son, behave at school and at home before the trip, or Father will change his mind and not take you."

Hiro came to a halt, standing on his bed about to jump up and down on it. He seemed to ponder this for a brief moment, his face growing quite pensive for a child so small, then the concentration vanished and his wide face broke into an irrepressible smile again.

"I'm going to New York!" he cried, jumping up and down on the bed.

Kimiko finally broke down and let a smile blossom on her own young face.

"Perhaps you will send me a postcard then or bring me a tiny souvenir," she said, a little wistfully.

Hiro jumped off the bed nimbly and kindly put a hand on his sister's shoulder.

"Don't worry, Kimiko. Father will take you on a trip someday too." She gave him a shy smile which he returned with his signature boyish grin. "Until then I will bring you back a postcard and a souvenir and a hot dog..."

He jumped back on the bed, happily listing all the things he would bring his sister as he leaped into the air again and again.

Outside the bedroom door their mother listened and smiled to herself before going to fetch the family luggage.

"Are you sure he is ready?" Kaito asked Ishi once they were in the privacy of their bedroom. "I could easily take Kimiko instead."

Ishi took her husband's hand as she sat next to him.

"If you wait then Hiro will never be ready. If you take him, trust him, then that is what he needs to become ready."

Kaito made a noise of disapproval in the back of his throat. "I hope you are right."

"He is your son, Kaito," Ishi said gently. "He needs to know you approve of him. He is not blessed with your confidence. We must nurture it in him. It is important."

"He is important." Kaito nodded. He kissed Ishi on the cheek. "And what would you like me to bring you back from New York?" he asked.

She smiled sweetly. "My happy little boy."
