Numb3rs Fic: Admission
Posted to numb3rs_slash

Title: Admission (Sequel to Truth)
Series/Universe: Epiphany
Pairing/Characters: Don/Billy
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: Billy's been shot and Don is with him at the hospital
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

The trip to the hospital had been a swirl of sights and sounds: Don's face coming in and out of focus as voices became sirens and the motion of the gurney became the motion of the ambulance. The only constants were the searing pain of the gunshot wound and the grip of Don's hand anchoring him through it.

Billy fought to keep his eyes open, but once they were rushing him through the hospital hallways to the operating room and Don was held back from joining him, he let go - missing the feel of Don's hand even as the pain disappeared into the blackness.

He almost woke right after surgery, but his eyelids were too heavy and the pull of drugged sleep too enticing for him to make the journey out.

He felt the pressure of Don's hand again, so he knew it had to be all right.

He woke all the way a few hours later, finally able to squeeze the hand in his, knowing it was Don squeezing back before he even opened his eyes.

The uncharacteristically gentle voice cut through the fog and Billy opened his eyes, wincing a little at the brightness of the overhead fluorescents.

"Must be bad," he croaked out with a crooked grin, "if you're being nice to me."

"Well, I did shoot you," Don joshed lightly, his tone still caring underneath.

"Yeah, you did." Billy put his free hand over his side and felt the thick bandages beneath his gown. "Do any real damage?"

Don smiled, mocking being smug. "Didn't hit a single internal organ. Apparently, I'm an excellent shot. You're just a bad bleeder."

Billy snorted. "Must have forgotten to put that on my FBI application." He shifted in the bed and stiffened as a jolt of pain hit him.

Don was out of his chair in an instant, but Billy waved him off and settled back down again.

"You need anything?"

"Nah, I'm good," Billy said tiredly. "Although if they have that really good pudding at this hospital, I'd go for that." His voice trailed off as his eyes grew heavy.

"Maybe later," Don suggested, taking his seat next to Billy again.

"Yeah, later..." Billy echoed, already drifting off.

He hesitated, something missing...

Then Don took his hand again and he sank with a sigh back into a healing sleep.

"You stole my pudding?"

Don looked surprised at the sound of Billy's voice, caught with his feet up on a second chair watching TV and eating pudding from a plastic cup with a plastic spoon.

"You're awake again."

"I was awake before?" Billy asked, confused.

"Yeah, for a little bit," Don said, putting his pudding aside. "But you've been out for a few hours since then."

"So you took advantage of a poor injured fellow FBI agent and robbed him of his well deserved pudding?" Billy mock protested.

Don grinned and reached behind him, pulling out three plastic cups of pudding.

"Nah, I sweet talked a nurse into bringing enough for both of us. Gave her the whole injured in the line of duty thing. She melted when I showed her the bullets in my Kevlar."

A shadow crossed Billy's face at the memory and he felt a little flip inside his chest.

"I had to tell her they were all for me," Don continued, ignoring his interruption, "since you're not supposed to be on solid food just yet, but they'll let you eat now that you're awake, so you should be fine." He pulled the cover off one and stuck a spoon in it before putting it on the tray beside Billy's bed for him. "It's good stuff, just like you remember."

His smile was so infectious, Billy caved and picked up the pudding.

"So what did I say when I was awake before? Just babbling or what?"

"You really don’t remember?"

"Man, I was on some pretty heavy drugs, so no, not really."

Don picked up his pudding again. "You were all weepy and shit," he teased. "You thought you were going to die and you told me you loved me and all."

"I never said that!" Billy countered.

"No, you didn't," Don admitted, going back to eating his pudding.

Billy's cup lay forgotten in his hand as he spoke, his voice soft yet firm with conviction.

"But I should have."

Gah! It lives!

The little one off fic that became a series grew wings and now there are three! /blinks/

I hadn't intended to put any effort into continuing this universe quite so soon, but I knew that having gone down the H/C path in Truth I was obligated to see it through.

Evidently the muse thought that should be tonight.

This fic unspooled in a matter of minutes and suddenly there it was.

I had planned on posting the series post tonight in lieu of a fic, but this story came up before I could even really get started on that post. Go figure. I guess the muse thought I'd do the series post and then put the universe on ice and she wanted to make it clear that would not be acceptable. Hehehe

The title was a little on the hard side, but I managed a triple threat. /grins/ We have hospital admissions, Don admitting that Billy did not make an admission of love and Bill actually admitting - though not with those three words - that he does love Don. Hee! I tried to keep the titles tied together in meaning and kind of sequence. One has an epiphany of the truth then can admit that truth to others. That admission can have consequences so you can expect to see that title in the future. ;-)

BTW, if any Bones fans are out there laughing about the FBI agent in the hospital with pudding plot this goes out to you because I totally stole that from Booth! (Bad me! But I loved that scene!) I had already planned on doing this fic as is, but the pudding angle just added a dimension of fun to it that suited Billy.

So here's another one, aslin! Keep on asking and I bet they keep on coming! LOL!

Behold: the Power of Pudding...

Thanks and hope you have a good day at work...

Yay! It was, as always, wonderful.

::wonders if there is a muse equivalent of a rain dance...::
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 25th, 2007 09:09 pm (UTC)
Rain dance... Hee! That's cute!

Glad you enjoyed it. The muse seems to like making you happy.

Heatheraslin on June 25th, 2007 09:46 pm (UTC)
Yay! Now I just have to figure out a way to lure the muse away and brainwash her with pictures of Charlie and Ian....

::goes away to plot::
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 25th, 2007 10:21 pm (UTC)
You want Charlie/Ian now? /headdesk/

Any particular C/I or something new?

Dare I ask? ;-)
Heatheraslin on June 26th, 2007 04:34 am (UTC)
Sorry, I've been rereading the conference wives series.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 04:53 am (UTC)

I was afraid you were going to try to make me revive the Obshina Series! Hehehe
Heatheraslin on June 26th, 2007 05:27 am (UTC)
I don't think I've read that one...

btw... i finished conflicts and resolutions. i enjoyed it a lot. any other fic's you recommend?
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 05:46 am (UTC)
It depends on what you are into. I don't really know your tastes yet. Tell me and I'll rec fic accordingly. I can rec fic based on pairings, ratings, length... I have hundreds to pick from.

Obshina is a drabble series, but since it's long it adds up to a decent sized fic.

Off the top of my head, if you liked Ash and Pines you might like A Shift in the Continuum. It's Charlie/Ethan from Prime Suspect. Slash but no porn - a nice relationship type story. And yes, it needs a sequel badly. Hehehe

A Shift in the Continuum - Part 1
A Shift in the Continuum - Part 2
Heatheraslin on June 26th, 2007 06:03 am (UTC)
I've read A Shift in the Continuum and really enjoyed it. I agree, it needs a sequel. But then, I pretty much think all your fic's need sequels. ^_^

As to what i like.... Charlie/Ian has to be at the top of my list, followed by Don/Cooper and Charlie/Larry. The longer the better.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 06:28 am (UTC)
Well, Obshina is my most intensive Charle/Ian. I have little bits and pieces past that.

Can I interest you in some Don/Ian? Instruction and Scenes from a Weekend are both good D/I.

I have a bunch of Coop!fic including one that is Coop/OMC called Florida. Don't Ask Don't Tell has Don in it but it's more Coop/OMC as well. Don/Billy is really good in Down a Dusty Dirt Road and Sucker. 90 Degrees is a scorching hot drabble of those two. Life on the Road is a short drabble series, but a good one.

I don't really write Charlie/Larry, but I seem to recall Too Much/Not Enough is that pairing. More drabbles, but then I *run* a drabble comm so that's not too unexpected. LOL!

Most - if not all - of the links to these fic would be in my 2006 Journal Review post. You can always jump to New Years day or the last day of any month for collected links to my fic.

Hooray! Great to see more of this. I like tender!Don and Billy getting past his macho side to admit his feelings to Don...

:gives muse more chocolate:
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 25th, 2007 09:15 pm (UTC)
/icon love!/

Yeah, some guys do the 'say it without saying it' thing, but I swear the muse is going to damn well make him say it before this series is done. /makes determined face/

Yay chocolate!

/watches muse abscond with chocolate/

I sense Consequences will not be far behind. I already know exactly what will happen in it, so hopefully those sweets will fuel the muse enough to get her to give me the words for it.

It is rather lovely. I can't remember who it was by. Possibly delgeserasca

I look forward to the next installment. :hands Emma chocolate, while checking muse isn't around:
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 07:54 am (UTC)
Hee! /hides chocolate/ /looks around furtively/

The muse is on overdrive. I think I finished four fic in the last 24 hours or so, sadly only one of which was something I really wanted her to work on. Oh well. Not like I have any say in the matter.

Thanks for the treats!

Oh, and yeah. Delga does nice work.

Agent Tight Pants... /snickers/

That's a good one too...
andi: Don Agent tight pantsadmiralandrea on June 26th, 2007 07:59 am (UTC)
Agent tight pants was my fault. nicelyobsessed was talking in her LJ about Serenity and how both Don and Mal wear tight trousers, so I said something about Agent tight pants, so she put it on an icon *g* I'm also to blame for the "sex on a stick" one she made. :is evol:
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 08:23 am (UTC)
Hee! I believe she's the one who made icons for my Obshina Series, which is Charlie/Ian.

I don't use icons, but I do enjoy seeing other people use them!

Aww, excellent last line.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 25th, 2007 09:20 pm (UTC)

I had the last line early on, but couldn't figure out where to end this thing. I had wanted to end at the penultimate section, but then I wouldn't have gotten to use that good last line.

I got the pudding part in okay (it was a bit long), but couldn't get a lead in to the final line.

I actually rewrote the few lines leading up ot the end so often I actually ended up rewriting them *after* I pasted the fic into LJ! /headdesk/ At least once I published I let it be.

One of these days I'm going to upgrade from great last lines to great *endings*...

A very sweet but guy-y fic. Liked how Don's hand anchored Coop throughout, meaning different things at different times.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on June 26th, 2007 02:06 am (UTC)

The Eppes are all very tactile, so I can see Don needing to keep that connection and Billy appreciating it.
PhilLeeGirlphilleegirl on July 8th, 2007 11:52 pm (UTC)
As soon as you got to the pudding, I started giggling cause I could see Don and Coop in a very similiar scene as between Booth and Hodgins.
But, this was much sweeter. I loved Coop needing/wanting Don's hand in his to sleep and heal.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on July 13th, 2007 07:43 pm (UTC)
Hee! I almost never rip stuff off from other TV shows (because ripping off from Numb3r is just *canon* /grins/) but OMG I loved that pudding scene with Booth and Hodgins! That whole episode is good, but whoever wrote that pudding scene was just brilliant. Seriously.

At least I gave Bones credit in my confession, so I guess that officially gets me off the hook for plagiarism, right? Hehehe

Thanks for all the lovely comments. It was such a treat to have you flood my inbox with them...
