"This is totally unnecessary."

Don stood beside the emergency room gurney where Billy sat getting his left arm bandaged.

"The bandages? Maybe..." Don said, smirking a little. "But a rusty nail in the arm? Sorry, but you're getting a tetanus shot."

"We're on a hunt. We don't have time for this shit," Billy groused, impatiently.

"Then you shouldn't have let more than ten years pass since your last shot," Don chided, trying not to grin. "Though you with lockjaw..."

"You're enjoying this a bit too much," Billy interrupted grumpily.

"The doctor will be with you in a moment," the male nurse bandaging him up said before leaving.

Don moved closer and took hold of Billy's chin, turning his face from side to side to inspect the scrapes and tiny gashes - one held closed with a butterfly bandage - caused by the blast debris.

"I certainly didn't enjoy watching you almost get killed out there," he said quietly. He stroked Billy's brow with his thumb, cupping his face subtly. "I liked you better with eyebrows," he teased, his tone lightening.

"Hey!" Billy grabbed Don's hand and held it affectionately. "They're only singed." The door opened and they quickly dropped hands.

"Mr. Cooper," the doctor said, looking up from his chart. "Let's take care of your shot and get you on your way."

"Great." Billy held out his arm. "Let's get this over with."

"Oh, I'm afraid that's not where we give tetanus shots," the doctor said apologetically.

Don let out a strangled chuckle, but covered his mouth when Billy glared at him.

"You don't have to look so smug," he said darkly.

Don couldn't hold back his laughter any longer. "No," he agreed. "But this has to be one of the best 'I told you so's in a long time..."

Bah! Almost none of you bought into the 'Oh No Billy!' ending of the previous fic in this series. You're all too savvy for me. (I bet you weren't even scared by my ominous summary!) :-P

So yes, Billy got hurt, but thanks to Don's quick thinking and minor league baseball arm, he's going to be just fine.

Although I'm not so sure about those eyebrows. /snickers/

I had to have a tetanus shot when I was a teenager (so yeah, bad me for not having an up to date booster) after stepping on a rusty nail and I honestly can't remember if it's a shot in the arm or, well, elsewhere. /grins/ Still, it made for better humor to have it not be and I guess I kind of liked that as the title as sort of a red herring and the kind of double meaning of being right being a sort of shot in the arm to Don (thus the smugness).

I managed to sneak in a tiny bit of tenderness, which I like, and tiny bit of homophobia, which I despise. Being big tough FBI agents doesn't mean they are fearless enough to be open, so they drop hands automatically when the door opens and they're no longer alone. Sad, but realistic...

FWIW, I had planned to publish these El Paso Series installments every Tuesday in July, but it ends up that this Tuesday is someone's birthday and I wrote them a very special SPN fic, which I am publishing instead.

So to whoever I told to wait until Tuesday to read the follow up to the cliffhanger, I did post it on Tuesday. I just backdated it to Monday because my stupid ISP wouldn't let me post it just before midnight. I was all set to publish just before midnight, keep it a private post until just after midnight, then release it

The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley...

(Yeah, I'm eccentric. What can you do? It comes with the muse territory...) ;-)

Re: Confession
This is a good lesson for stubborn Coop and I hope Don will use that for a blackmail hehe

Re: Confession
The shot goes in the arm, not the butt.

Eyebrows are overrated. *g*
I really liked that Don had the sense to think it was a trap,
since Billy wasn't willing to wait.
Now if Don can just try not to stare as Billy gets his shot...

Looking forward to next installment.

El Paso series
This is wonderful. I like the interaction between Billy and Don. I can see Billy coming to Los Angeles and continuing their relationship.

Oo, tentanus shots are nasty. Be happy that's all you're getting, Coop!

I saw Don and Billy dropping hands when the doctor came in not as homophobia but as the typical guy discomfort at showing tenderness in public.

Hee. Don totally deserved his moment of smugness in this *g* And I thought the hand dropping was more a natural reaction to not wanting to be seen being "soft" than because they were worried about being caught. After all, they're tough, macho FBI agents, not girls *smirks*

Brilliant last line!

Poor Billy, tet jabs do suck, and I have a bad feeling I'm due for one soon :(

I haven't had one since I was a teenager, so I really can't recall but needles are never fun.

I really need a Billy Cooper icon.

I adore this story! That perfect balance of roughness, snarkiness and tenderness between them.

melissima has some nice Billy icons as does, I think, 1trackmind.

I think you hit upon just why I like this pairing so much: that balance of all those great things. This series was a ton of fun. FWIW, I have a longer version of the final drabble if you're interested. I hated cutting it down so feel free to email if you're curious.
